THINK TO FIX — The Troubleshooter’s Mindset | Book One
Stop guessing. Stop changing parts. Start understanding systems.
Think To Fix teaches a practical troubleshooting mindset centered on systems thinking, failure mode analysis, root cause analysis, testing, evidence, and verification.

Designed for technicians, engineers, field service professionals, and anyone who wants to become a stronger technical problem solver.
Don’t Memorize the Repair. Understand the System.
Before asking, “What part should I replace?” ask:
- What is the machine supposed to do?
- What systems are required for that function?
- What conditions must exist?
- What could prevent those conditions from being satisfied?
Think To Fix teaches you to move from reaction to reasoning. Instead of treating a symptom as the diagnosis, you learn to understand function, system relationships, failure modes, measurements, and root cause.
A Better Way to Troubleshoot
Think in Systems
Understand how electrical, optical, mechanical, cooling, sensing, and control systems depend on one another.
Follow the Evidence
Build a hypothesis, test it, eliminate possibilities, and let measurements guide the diagnosis.
Find the Root Cause
Do more than replace the failed component. Understand why the failure occurred and what caused it.
What You Will Learn
- Define technical failures clearly
- Understand system relationships
- Identify inputs, outputs, and feedback
- Follow sequence of operation
- Analyze cause-and-effect relationships
- Apply Failure Mode Analysis
- Apply Root Cause Analysis
- Build failure trees
- Design diagnostic tests
- Eliminate possibilities logically
- Follow evidence instead of assumptions
- Troubleshoot intermittent failures
- Understand temperature and load-related failures
- Verify repairs before declaring success
- Develop stronger technical judgment
- Become a more independent troubleshooter
The Think To Fix Method
FUNCTION → SYSTEM → RELATIONSHIP → FAILURE MODE → TEST → EVIDENCE → ROOT CAUSE → REPAIR → VERIFY
Every technical problem becomes easier to approach when you break it into logical steps. Start with what the machine is supposed to do. Identify the systems involved. Understand how those systems depend on one another. Consider realistic failure modes. Test your theory. Follow the evidence. Find the cause. Repair it. Then verify that the entire system operates correctly.
The Error Is Not Always the Cause
The component reporting the problem may not be the component causing the problem.
A temperature error does not automatically mean the temperature sensor is defective. Low output does not automatically mean the source has failed. A communication error does not automatically mean the control board is bad. A calibration failure does not automatically mean the handpiece needs replacement.
Errors tell you where the machine detected an abnormal condition. Troubleshooting determines where the problem actually began.
That distinction is at the heart of Think To Fix.

Technical Safety
Think To Fix teaches diagnostic reasoning and troubleshooting methodology. It is not a substitute for manufacturer service procedures, proper technical training, applicable safety standards, lockout/tagout procedures, laser safety controls, electrical safety practices, personal protective equipment, or other required protections. Always work within your training, authorization, and available safety controls.
Become a Better Troubleshooter
You do not need to know every machine. You need to know how to approach the problem in front of you.
Observe. Question. Understand. Test. Verify.
THINK TO FIX
Understand the System. Follow the Evidence. Fix the Cause.
