Frequently asked questions

Does this book cover lasers?

No — and that is the point. Lasers appear only where a brief contrast is needed to explain what a non-laser modality is or is not. Everything else on the market is here.

It covers IPL and LED. Aren't those light-based?

They are, and they are included precisely because they are not lasers. Intense pulsed light is a filtered flashlamp — polychromatic, non-collimated and non-coherent — and it is routinely sold as though it behaved like a laser. The book treats the distinction rigorously, because getting it wrong causes burns and hypopigmentation in darker and tanned skin.

I treat mostly Fitzpatrick IV–VI. Is this relevant?

Highly. Most of the technologies in this book do not target melanin at all, which is why they have become the backbone of practices treating skin of color. Phototype risk is mapped across every modality, and the chapters flag which devices demand caution and why.

Is it technical, or is it a buying guide?

Both, deliberately. Part II teaches the physics and clinical science properly. Parts III and IV convert that understanding into a purchase decision and a way to interrogate the person selling. You cannot buy well without the first part, and the first part is academic without the second.

Do I need a physics or engineering background?

No. The book assumes an intelligent reader, not a physicist. Chapters 2 and 3 build the necessary foundation from first principles, and every technical term is defined in a 190-entry glossary.

I already own devices. Is it still useful?

Yes. Chapter 31 covers launching and integrating a device that is underperforming, Chapter 32 models whether it is actually earning, and the technology chapters cover protocol design, patient selection and adverse-event management for equipment you already run.
